How can I read music, to play guitar songs?

How can I read guitar music, or tabulatures, or notes, or whatever they are called. I know the numbers represents the frets and the lines the strings, but there is something more. For example, when I launch Guitar Pro, above this are the notes, you know what I mean, black points. Some of them are longer, some of them are thin, how can I read them?
