I’m having trouble just hitting one string with my index finger.
@cynicaloptimist999 YES, IT TOOK ME TWO MONTHS. MY ADVICE IS NOT TO WORRY TOOOOOOO MUCH ABOUT ACCURACY AND START GETTING GROOVE. WATCH MOLLY TUTTLE’S YOU TUBE CLAWHAMMER GUITAR CLIP. SHE USUALLY HITS MORE THAN ONE STRING WITH INDEX, BUT THE MELODY IS CLEAR ENOUGH, AND THE GROOOOOOVE IS WHAT MAKES THE MUSIC.
IMHO
Steve what gauge strings do you use for claw hammer ?
@46Hanky Hiya, any guage works. I use mediums, same as i use in my Celtic fingerstyle. But lights work well also.
Happy clawing,
sb
Hey Steve, we corresponded a couple of years ago about your Mel Bay frailing book.
Can do that pretty good now ,but this is different. Suppose I should be able to do both. Any tab for songs using this technique?

Prince Charles’ pick! Haha.
Thanks for the video!
@TheBubbarom For some reason your reply didn’t come up
Thanks Steve. You`re a terrific teacher. I`m just trying to develop my fingerstyle technique after many years of flat picking and the clawhammer style is one I`m going to try to develop after seeing your wonderful lesson. Gorgeous guitar by the way.

Great lesson, great hair. Thanks. It´s all about the hoes.
Amazing lesson, Steve. And thanks for making clear what kind of hoe the farmer spent a couple hours with. But seriously… great great stuff. Cheers mate.
Love….’gotta learn it.
Kind Regards, Steve (another steve)
Steve, it does make the world a better place, thanks to you.
Steve – this has really got me going! Been playing on and off for a lot of years – been looking for something really inspiring and new – after seeing this I want to master clawhammer. Am putting in the time working on bum diddy, and notice your thumb sits on the E string on the diddy strikes – mine wants to hover off the strings -how critical is this? Also cant find next lessons you mention – you are a very very good teacher – are there more follow up clawhammer lessons available yet?
Hi Joplinman. Good observation. I am in the camp of clawhammer players who believes that the thumb should be firmly stationed on the sixth sttring when it’s not otherwise engaged. This helps with focus and minimizes overall hand movement. This may be awkward at first but it is wise to work on it.
As for new lessons, I filmed a couple new ones last week that should be posted shortly.
Thanks for trying out the Claw. I hope it continues to take you in new directions.

Thanks Steve – I will work on it and keep a look out for further lessons. The main difficulty I am finding with this first lesson is working out your pattern of finger and thumb strikes in the demo piece at the start of the lesson – you are very fast! Is there anywhere I can see this piece slowed down in order to get the pattern right rather than approximate? Sounds SO great – and I really want to nail it properly. Rob
do you need nails on your finger for this? cause you responded to someone saying you dont need thumb nails but i have no nails what so ever? i was thinking of buying finger picks to help me? i really wanna learn this technique to get dire straights style of playing down
