An acoustic guitar does not use an external device such as an amplifier to be heard but it relies on the string vibration to be transmitted through the bridge and saddle to the body via soundboard which is usually made of spruce or cedar. The sound is not a loud as an electric guitar.
In electric guitars, transducers convert the string vibration to an electric signal. This signal is in turn amplified and fed to speakers. However, the body of the electric guitar still performs a role in shaping the resultant tonal signature.
There are several different categories of acoustic guitars, some of which are listed below:-
Classical guitars
These are usually strung with nylon strings and played in a seated position They are used to play a various musical styles including classical music. The classical guitar has a wide, flat neck which allows a person to play scales, arpeggios and certain chord forms more easily than on other styles of guitar.
Renaissance and Baroque guitars
These are older than the modern classical guitar and are also smaller and more delicate and produce a much quieter sound. The strings are paired in courses similar to a modern 12 string guitar, but they only have four or five courses of strings instead of six.
12 String guitars
This guitar typically has steel strings and is widely used in blues, folk music, and rock and roll. The 12-string guitar has six courses made up of two strings each, similar a mandolin or lute.
Archtop guitars
These are steel string instruments in which the top and sometimes the back of the guitar are carved in a curved rather than a flat shape. The usual archtop guitar has a deep, large, hollow body, the shape of which is similar to that of a mandolin or violin family instrument.
In an acoustic guitar, it is the body that is a major factor of the overall sound quality. The top of the guitar, or soundboard, is a carefully crafted item made of spruce or red cedar. This thin piece of wood, which is often only 2 or 3 mm thick, is strengthened by differing types of internal bracing. Most of the instrument’s sound is heard through the vibration of the guitar top as the energy of the vibrating strings is transferred to it.
